Reiki Body Check-in

One of the best things I’ve learned in my reiki and yoga training is a basic reminder to feel into your body. In somatic therapy it is called doing a body check-in. Such a simple tool and life-changing.

If you have resistance, and are even thinking this is stupid, it’s too simple, how could I not be in my body. Or conversely, if it feels overwhelming and as if you don’t know how – If any of these things – then good! That’s like a neon sign to do this.

If you have two minutes – you can do this.

You can do it as often as you like.

We have been taught to ignore our bodies, to push past our physical limits, to master them.

Magical things happen when we tune in, drop in and listen to our cells. We gain calm. We become present. Our lives begin to work again.

The process is very simple:

Sit down even if just for a minute. Keep your eyes open, gazing down at the floor or at a lower point in the room.

If possible sit down with your back against something solid, a chair with a good back, a piller, or lean with your back against a wall.

Feel where you back touches the wall and supports it. Feel where you bum and legs are connected to the chair or ground. Feel the strength of your feet on the ground.

If you can, put one hand over your heart and the other on your belly. Or, lightly, palms down on your thighs.

Now just simply breathe.

Breathe into your body. Notice how it feels. Where does the breathe go? Where does your awareness go? What thoughts pop up? What sensations in your body? What part of your body wants attention?

There are no right or wrongs. If something hurts, or aches. If there are memories that are uncomfortable, even if a feeling of sadness rises that’s ok. If you feel any positive sensations, that’s ok. It’s just observation.

Just tell it I appreciate you. I am here. I am listening. I love you.

After a few moments bring your awareness back to the surface and your surroundings.

Look around the room, or notice two or three things in your immediate surroundings.

Congratulations! This is the first step in coming back to yourself.

Be well,

until next time.
